What our clients are saying

What is Functional Patterns?

Make gains without the pains!

Functional Patterns is fitness training designed for humans by humans. By cracking the code on the way we’ve evolved to move, we supercharge your body’s ability to move better, and teach you how to train without all the pains that typically come with other training methods.

Results from REAL SAN DIEGANS

We help San Diegans from all backgrounds refocus, regain, and enable their movements pain free. Get back to hiking, running, surfing and doing the things you love without pain today. See below for REAL results!

Who We Are

The Future of Human Health and Fitness… is Now

The conceptual framework of Functional Patterns was first established in 2009 by CEO and Founder Naudi Aguilar. The notion of training in relation to an organism’s biological characteristics was borne out of this framework, and after stringent testing and diligent research, the Functional Patterns methodology was created. Drawing from anthropology, kinesiology, biology, sociology, physiology and more — Functional Patterns has taken an integrative approach its practice since inception.

With the launch of the Power of Posture in 2013, the online spread of the Functional Patterns system of training saw tremendous growth. Bringing in people from around the world, thousands of individuals sought training to address their imbalances and learn how to move better by exceeding the standard practices of the time. Since then, nearly five hundred people have been certified in the FP training system spanning every continent, with thousands more using our 10 Week Online Course from the comfort of their homes to great benefit. The combined effect this education has had on the fitness industry has been a shift in the physical training landscape towards exercises and program designs that incorporate more unilateral, rotational, and contralateral movements.

“Hey what’s going on y’all. My name is Miles Shuler and I’ve been working with Functional Patterns since January and it’s been a journey worth taking. I’ve done many different types of training in my lifetime given that I’ve been blessed enough to have experience in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers. I’m currently a free agent fighting to work my way back into the NFL, and I know Functional Patterns will give me a really good chance of fulfilling that vision. I still have much more to fix with my body and a lot more to master with my movements. However, I have made major structural improvements with my body. Also I’ve been able to move with better connection throughout my body as well. But most importantly, I’m starting to feel a sense of healthiness when I’m training on the field. I came to FP with a torn mcl 8 months ago, and we’ve been able to work on the proper connections to bring me back stronger than ever. I’m back to sprinting and cutting, but at a more efficient rate on the football field, and of course, without any knee pain. There’s many more things I can talk about with FP like studying and replicating movements through connections and tensions. Or how my back issue has improved significantly since starting this journey. But hey, let just say that I’m excited to continue to work with functional patterns and I’m grateful for the work we’ve been able to put in so far.”

“In the last year since starting FP I learned to run on the balls of my feet with my best form ever. Running has become a fun recovery workout where I feel my way through my steps and find ways to more proportionately involve my upper body. This has led to improved thoracic engagement in my stride and the other corrective exercises have resulted in adding .25” to my height (.75” if measured at the end of the day, thanks gravity!). My sport involves lots of wrestling and joint locks. My neck regularly gets cranked on. Theres no question that I’m leaner and stronger because of FP, but what is most notable is that no matter how I’m feeling from what I put my body through, I am only one 60 minute session away from being literally pain free. I’ve corrected so many injuries this past year with Rodney that my body comes up with new ones. Never the same, always less than the one preceding it. Despite the fact that what I do for a sport isn’t very “functional” I still make gains. My right knee had limited range of flexion for 4 years after two surgeries; now, with no stretching whatsoever I’ve reclaimed that entire leg and I can use my full range of movement in it offensively in a grappling match. At the beginning of year one, I didn’t even know what kind of goals to set for Functional Patterns. Now I have too many. The range and depth of dysfunction in just one person is often overwhelming and I am no exception. Heres to another year of getting younger! “
